21/21 FEATURED ARTIST – SWEET TEETH

21 SWEET TEETH

Artist: SWEET TEETH
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: Aggressive Pop
Members: Nathan, David, Marnie, Chris

And the final band on this special list is, drum roll please….Sydney’s SWEET TEETH.

Our first real meeting was at the FREE PUSSY RIOT show we put on a few months back at Flinders Hotel. It was headlined by DIE! DIE! DIE! and man it was a hell crazy night.

Throughout 2012 we have been listening to SWEET TEETH and we’ve checked out their dope videos, but nothing prepared us for how exciting these guys were going to be live. SWEET TEETH totally kill it live and their punk/heavy pop fury is addictive and fun. We chanted that GIRLS song around the office for days.

SWEET TEETH are champions of their own universe and what they’re doing totally rules! So you should keep up with these guys and their potty mouths, check their Facebook stats, they’re hilarious!

SWEET TEETH front up with a sweet smile, but that’s really just a disguise. Underneath it all is a band who have the ability to seriously fuck shit up! and the sooner people start paying attention the better, because they already have what it takes to blow up!

Pretty sure SWEET TEETH don’t really give a shit about what we say anyway and that’s rad!

20/21 FEATURED ARTIST – CRASS CREATURES

20 CRASS CREATURES

Artist: CRASS CREATURES
City: Brisbane, Qld
Style: Punk
Members: Alex Hicksons, Simon Parsons, Robert McEvoys, Nick Slaters, Liam McMullens

It’s pretty much common knowledge that Brisbane breeds good bands and they are definitely responsible for the fair share of punk driven indie music which still floods the music landscape today, primarily youth broadcaster Triple J. Just off the top of our heads the list reads like so; VIOLENT SOHO, MILLIONS, DUNE RATS, THE VELOCIRAPTORS, GUNG HO, DZ DEATHRAYS and we’re sure there’s more. That’s an impressive list right? There’s something in the water! Pretty sure that some Sydney bands think the exposure that Brisbane bands get Nationally is totally lope sided, but for now that’s just how the cookie crumbles.

CRASS CREATURES is a new band from the same town and we believe that they have what it takes to be added to that list in 2013. Their songs are cut from a similar cloth as their counterparts, but they also have something a little different happening. They have more of a punk brat feel to their songs mixed in with some great double up of guitar melodies (similar to the Strokes) then add in there some darker ideas which make them a serious threat to bands that lack attitude. Their front man Alex has an A.D.D kinda stage presence, it’s a strength that could set them apart from the pack, especially when this band eventually comes fully out of its shell.

CRASS CREATURES are fresh and definitely pack a punch live. The last time they came to Sydney was when MSR took over MUM. They definitely impressed alot of people with their take no prisoners party vibe.

There are alot of possibilities here and we are excited to see them back in Sydney when they return in 2013. CRASS CREATURES could be the next big punk band from Brisbane. Y’all should keep an eye on these guys in 2013!

19/21 FEATURED ARTIST – CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS

19 CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS
Artist: CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: Rock
Members: Cass, Mitchell, Jack, Mody, Xavier

CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS are a sick band from Sydney who like to party, tour and play loud ear splintering live shows. If you’ve been lucky enough to hang out with these guys you’d understand that this band dig each others company and basically life’s a breeze, especially when members of your band are actually good friends and most of the bullshit (ego’s, dramas ie; emotional and psychological) are non-existent, which makes for more time to have fun and make music.

CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS are definitely not a sit around prance all talk no walk kinda band, they’re the real deal and their output is impressive for an independent band living in Sydney. Constantly putting out fresh new releases and kick arse video’s is key to their future success. Their latest awesome video ‘MOON EATER’ shows a band who doesn’t really give a shit about what people think and they just do what they want.

Their song ideas are strong and nothing ever gets boring. The tempo slows down only to go up again and everyone gets dragged along for the good times.

2013 should be a kick arse year for these guys and their future releases (with the right support around them) will elevate CWLG from underground show smashers to street level Zombie killers. Pretty sure the ears bleeding comes free of charge.

If there are combinations for success in music then CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS have it in spades, they just have to ride out the storm that is the Sydney music scene and eventually they will rise above.

18/21 FEATURED ARTIST – SAMOAN PUNKS

18 SAMOAN PUNKS

Artist: SAMOAN PUNKS
City: Bankstown, NSW
Style: Samoan Punk
Members: Samoan people

We discovered SAMOAN PUNKS on a holiday we had in Samoa late last year. They were on their way to New York then to Sydney this year and apparently their goal was to spend their time following the winter between Sydney, Samoa and New York.

Recently we heard news that they were planning a big stadium tour of Samoa in December 2012. Unfortunately the tour had to be postponed due to Cyclone Evan.

We’re hoping that these guys will get back to Sydney and play some shows over the summer but it’s highly unlikely because rumour is they are headlining the Big Day Out in the Pacific islands in 2013.

SAMOAN PUNKS are currently working with big time producer Mr Garageband on a new record surfacing sometime in 2013. But for now you can grab their debut album ‘LAST NIGHT IN NEW YORK CITY, TAKIN BUDDY HOLY TO KARAOKE!’ and their new 3 track ep ‘COOL YOU SUX’ for free at their Bandcamp site HERE.

SAMOAN PUNKS recently took out 17 trophies at the Samoan Music Awards including Video of the Year for their song COOL. They also pipped Australia’s Gotye at the finish line for single of the year with their song COOL (it’s all the rage!). They also took out the the greatest Samoan punk band award. SAMOAN PUNKS are very excited about the award and had this to say “We are very excited about the award!”.

Their big hope right now is that their application for permanent residency in Australia will come through. They’re currently living at Villawood detention centre but were pardoned by the Queen to attend the Samoan Music Awards. Word on the streets is that they are very keen to settle down in Bankstown or Bondi, so keep an eye out.

“SAMOAN PUNKS ARE THE GREATEST SAMOAN PUNK BAND IN THE WORLD!” Their words not ours. Check it!

17/21 FEATURED ARTIST – THE BUNGALOWS

17 THE BUNGALOWS

Artist: THE BUNGALOWS
City: Gerringong, NSW
Style: Garage by the Sea – Indie / Surf / Jungle
Members: G Gannon, Cuneo, Matt Gannon, Wildman

Gerringong’s finest sons THE BUNGALOWS are a good times party band who have been rocking out all over up and down the East Coast over the last few years. Musically THE BUNGA’s cross over between a slightly reggae skar feel mixed with indie garage rock stylings. Vocally there is a strong message coming in loud and clear about life for your average man surviving in today’s world in search of true happiness. With alot of songs these days lacking any message at all it’s nice to hear something a little deeper while keeping it fun. THE BUNGALOWS are a tight unit live and surely know how to get the party started.

With a few releases under their belts the boys have been takin some time out from touring and playing shows to do some travelling and planning for the year 2013. Drummer Wildman visited family in the US, brothers bass man Matt and Front man/guitarist G took some time out in Bali while lead guitarist Cuneo spent the year travelling around Australia. True story.

Over the last year THE BUNGALOWS have kicked some sweet goals getting a few spins of triple j and some solid airplay on FBi Radio here in Sydney via the release of their self titled album which was produced by ex Gerling member, the talented Burke Reid (producer; THE DRONES, MESS HALL and Liam Finn).

In 2013 see’s THE BUNGALOWS return with new music, they recorded with Sydney’s new talent, music producer Wade Keighran (Wolf & Cub/ex Scare) and mixed by Darren Cross (ex Gerling/Better Airs) which is very exciting indeed.

We are all looking forward to seeing THE BUNGALOWS back on the scene, if you know what I mean.

16/21 FEATURED ARTIST – WARCHIEF

16 WARCHIEF
Artist: WARCHIEF
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: Progressive Dream Rock
Members: Elyse Beer, Rachael Beer, Jesse Chockman, Josh Haworth-Webb, Paul Suares

WARCHIEF are a tight five piece progressive rock band from the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Their music takes on a large spectrum of sound from silence all the way to loud soundscapes giving them alot of room to move as a band.

WARCHIEF have only been around since February this year and already they are pulling no punches live with sisters Elise and Rachel doing an amazing job with their strong vocals and sweet harmonies supported by Jesse who makes dreamy shapes with his guitar and the tight partnership between Josh on bass and Paul on drums who round off the progressive feel of the band. Their live show is definitely something that will help the word get out there to more people purely because they possess alot of dynamics, part journey music and part gypsy vibes which translates to alot of positive energy on stage.

Being a new band means that there are only a few demo’s and videos online to keep you occupied for now while they spend December locked up in the studio recording their official debut release. We look forward to hearing what is coming next for these guys in 2013.

WARCHIEF will take a break from recording to play a special free show for us at Canteen, Bondi this Thursday 20th December with special guests THE DESOLATIONS. See you there!

15/21 FEATURED ARTIST – FAIT ACCOMPLI

15 FAIT ACCOMPLI

Artist: FAIT ACCOMPLI
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: soul Punk
Members: Mr Ray, Ms Skarlett, Mr Brett

Our main writer slipped over and broke his arm at the kebab shop after seeing Tame Impala last night. This morning we asked the Work experience kid to write a quick little article about our feature artist FAIT ACCOMPLI, but he had weekend community service for drawing dicks on a wall.

So instead of the usual program we’ve been running this December we decided to send some random email questions to the band. We managed to get in touch with singer/ guitarist Mr Ray who was kind enough to return our questions. Here’s what he had to say…

How’s it going?

I’m good, just chillin.

What are you up to?

Just watched Australian Joel Parkinson win the Surf World Championship on the TV today. It was very inspiring.

Are you stoned?

Ya Mun! Nah just joking.

When was your last night out on the town?

On Thursday night I went to see TWINCEST play at Canteen in Bondi. They were amazing! it was totally mad fun. Later in the night I bumped into VD and Cowboy from the GOONS. I don’t remember getting home.

Are you an alcoholic?

No, I think I’m doing fine thanks.

Are you a drug addict?

No! Are these questions for real?

How was the year for FAIT ACCOMPLI?

We had a great year, getting everything back to the right level has been the main mission for us this year and now it feels like we’re ready to hit up the next adventure.

Any highlights?

Our SPIES tour was pretty amazing, heading to Perth was great and visiting Bon Scott’s grave was spiritually fulfilling. Playing two shows in Byron Bay was definitely a big highlight for us this year. I feel like the Coastal towns really understand what we are trying to do as a band. The last time we played The Great Northern, Byron Bay it was packed and we got an encore. This wasn’t one of those pretend encores, this was the real deal. Hearing people screaming out your band’s name is one of the most exciting feelings for any band.

Any Lowlights?

No not really. Well there was the microphone to the face incident. haha!

FAIT ACCOMPLI has gone through many lineup changes, what has that been like for you as a musician?

I see life as constant change, so as long as I am growing as a person then it doesn’t bother me who I am playing music with. With every person that has been in Fait, I try to just play to their strengths, it doesn’t matter if someone has big skills or none, if they have soul then you can always work with that. As soon as a musician moves away from the band on a passion level I just readjust myself to the next scenario.

If your heart is still in it the music will live on and when it’s time for it to die you’re pretty much the first to know. But right now everything seems to be in its right place.

Are you guys playing any Music Festivals over the summer?

We’d like to be, I mean we applied for many but we got the old rejection email a few times, which sucks!

What’s coming up next for FAIT ACCOMPLI?

We hope to have all of our new songs ready to go in the early part of 2013. From there we’d like to demo our new tracks then hopefully try to get ourselves into a decent studio with a strong producer to record what we think will be our best work yet. So yeah can’t wait.

O and there’s been talk about looking for proper management etc…

What is your songwriting process?

I tend to just listen out for the sounds, the songs generally fall from the sky. But right now I’m listening out harder than usual. Songs are very casual affairs for us, like we can just jam and write a song in 5 minutes. Our songs tend to write themselves, it’s bizarre. At the moment I am really challenging myself to think hard about songs and ideas, so maybe with a little bit of effort we could possibly make a record that will represent something different, maybe even a brave new world. So that is potentially very exciting for us as a band.

What are you hoping to achieve in 2013?

We are trying our best to get on music festivals next year around Australia. We get pretty decent live reviews so we just think it’s the next step for us. So yeah message to all bookers out there, please book us! You can contact our booker here – email: weareartistunion@gmail.com

We also want to travel abroad, so working hard on this new recording is very important to us.

Do you have any favourite bands in Australia right now?

Check out the 21 bands that are being featured in the SYDNEY UNDERGROUND MUSIC MONTH. They are all rad!

Any last words?

People really need to start paying attention to real live bands in 2013 or else we will all die.

PS: Here’s a live review we got from the internet…

SUGAR ARMY ALBUM LAUNCH, GOOD GOD, SYDNEY 18.10.2012
Kicking off the show was locals Fait Accompli which are a magnificent mix of garage rock and indie rock. The howling vocals and the furious drum beats created such a sound in the tiny room, there was a need to take a break outside. There are no negatives in the how loud they were; it felt like they needed to be that loud, any softer the band could sound drowned out by each other.  The drumming was like watching a seasoned metal drummer and perfectly backed up by the intense strumming by bassist. The frantic strumming and virtuosos of guitarist was something to be astounded by. Definitely watch out for Fait Accompli in the future years.

14/21 FEATURED ARTIST – BLOODS

14 BLOODS

Artist: BLOODS
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: Garage folk pop
Members:  MC, Dirk, Sweetie

Sydney is really kickin ass at the moment with so many quality bands around town right now and three-piece BLOODS is definitely one of them.

BLOODS are making alot of noise with their fun take on garage punk music. Vocalist/guitarist MC actually owns one of the best voices in Sydney giving garage rock a much needed girls perspective on the situation with great lyrical action between her and Sweetie on bass while Dirk smashes from behind on the drums.

A tight unit live BLOODS have already played some great shows, their up coming tour with UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA is definitely a kick ass way to start off 2013.

Musically BLOODS sound would definitely go down well in the USA or the UK alongside any band out there that has a slant towards arty punk and even cross over electronic punk styles.

Making videos is helping BLOODS keep the vibe alive and also working closely with music peeps HAND GAMES is helping them make their way through the confusing maze that is the Australian music industryyyy (hate that word).

If this gang just keeps on with their explosive creative output, their passion along with all the hard work will allow BLOODS to float on far above the rest.

But seriously everything we’ve said together with an awesome name like BLOODS what can actually go wrong?

13/21 FEATURED ARTIST – MYLEE AND THE MILKSHAKES

13 MYLEE AND THE MILKSHAKES

Artist: MYLEE AND THE MILKSHAKES
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: Garage folk pop
Members: Mylee, Ozzie, Ray, Tristan, Kathryn, Cowboy

MYLEE GRACE is Australia’s future music royalty in the making! Apologies in advance but we have special powers and we see into the Zeitgeist and so it’s due time that everyone else caught up.

Mylee is a humble (we sometimes think too humble) music maker, mum and lover of the beach who comes from a talented family of music loving gypsies and her whole reason for being on this earth is to bless us all with her ability to make sweet music.

So yeah Mylee is one talented mamma and there have been way too many occasions where we have seen this fact proven over and over again. Mylee Grace has a way with words that seem to blend effortlessly into songs and together with the sound of her gifted voice (we’re talkin next level), people generally walk away from her shows either really happy or as better human beings.

Her live band includes a stream of talented friends; her partner in crime Ozzie on bass (Goons of Doom), Tristan on lead guitar and Kathryn on keys and cello. Ray on drums (Fait Accompli/Goons of Doom) and Cowboy (Goons of Doom) pops in on drum duties depending on everyone’s busy schedules. On top of that there’s always a handful of friends willing to bombard the stage and sing back ups or play percussion. Mylee’s music is just addictive and friends and strangers alike just want to share in the experience. It’s a rare thing but Mylee has a bizarre mother goose effect on people. haha!

Over the last year Mylee has been on tour up and down the East Coast, in the USA and even Bali in support of her debut ep BABY TALK. She recently headlined our LA FEMME show following a trip to Byron Bay to lay down some new tracks with producer Pauly B, Ozzie and friends, now a new recording is ready to be released out there to the world.

This baby comes out in early 2013 and all we can see are good times ahead for the Mylee Grace train.

12/21 – FEATURED ARTIST – DEAD BEAR

12 DEAD BEAR
Artist: DEAD BEAR
City: Batemans Bay, NSW
Style: Indie Punk Experimental
Members: Matt Jenkin, Liam Gray, Don Richards

DEAD BEAR are a cool indie experimental post punk band from Batemans Bay in the South Coast of NSW. The first time we saw these guys play totally blew us out of the water! It was bizarre that an unknown band all the way from the South Coast had this massive cross over sound and they were all like really young, like still in High School young!

Their music is kind of like Fugazi crossed over with Nirvana and some of their own personal influences thrown into the mix. Anyway what ever it is they are doing, it is working and we can’t wait to hear a proper recording from these guys.

Their local venue NORTH STREET CAFE has been a breeding ground for live music, venue owner the legendary Mr Drew has put in a good effort for this community inviting a massive cross-section of underground bands from Hard Ons to Fait Accompli, The Go Roll Your Bones to Zeahorse, The Bungalows and Goons of Doom to tour the South Coast over the years making Batemans Bay a great place to see bands.

Without Drew’s efforts in supporting live music a band like DEAD BEAR may have never existed, let alone some other amazing local bands like BEACH COMA and DEAD GANG who are currently residing in Melbourne.

North St Cafe took a hiatus for a little while, but we  are happy to say that they will be back in business, better and stronger. So keep an eye out for shows back at The Northern in the Bay in 2013.

We don’t have any musical evidence of DEAD BEAR just yet, but trust us when we say, you will be hearing from them soon. And when your ears prick up listening to the radio or one day at a show, just remember this “We told you so!”
