RIOT OF THE DAY /// ECCA VANDAL TRIPLE J ALBUM OF THE WEEK!

What’s up Riotz! As you all know we love ECCA VANDAL, we fell in love with her early in the piece and we have been pretty hyped on her ongoing mission to keep it real within the confines of a safe Australian music industry in the most ECCA way possible.

So Yes! we managed to get our hands on her self titled debut album and ever since its release we have been lost in all of the colours. And boy if this is just the start of her journey, then we say ‘the sky is the limit’ for Melbourne’s great heroine of dynamic intense and soulful rock / electronic sounds. Congratulations ECCA VANDAL!

This album is a buzzing hummer of a record. And although the radio hits already exist ie; END OF TIME, BROKE DAYS PARTY NIGHTS and FUTURE HEROINE, its the hard hitting track PRICE OF LIVING that show her bands muscle. These guys are tight! Could even be the tightest musical unit in Oz for a long time since the early days of Regurgitator.

This record has many vibes, but it really starts to open up towards the end with the more guitar feely tracks sending us into a frenzy making songs like OUT ON THE INSIDE and closer BAD HABIT the real winners for us. But that’s just how we feel today, tomorrow is another day and songs like YOUR ORBIT and COLD OF THE WORLD create the electronic vibez for all to appreciate. Damn!

Look! the record is kinda faultless. It’s got everything you need and more and all we want is another record ASAP. Stat!

Ecca Vandal is musically fearless, her album proves that she stands on a very solid musical foundation and we look forward to what comes next.

While writing our review we turned on the web and realised that she has hit ALBUM OF THE WEEK status at Triple J and that is something worth celebrating! The more people get to hear Ecca’s songs the better the shape of the local musical landscape will be.

So if Ecca Vandal is still new to you then we suggest you get out to a show and get down to her sounds. Pretty sure there’s only a few gigs left on her current album tour, but there is no doubt she’ll be back at it over the summer. But if you can’t get to a gig, buy her music HERE and HERE.

Enjoy this week on the air waves and tune in to the ECCA VANDAL sound!

BOOM! BOOM! REPRAZENTTTTT!!!!

RIOT OF THE DAY /// FIVE YEARS AGO! FREE PUSSY RIOT!

MY PUSSY RIOT was a killer music compilation we put out five years ago in support of punk art feminists PUSSY RIOT who were arrested for staging a protest against Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin inside an Orthodox Cathedral in Russia. Some of Australia’s most killer independent artists kindly donated their songs for no charge which was pretty awesome.

We ended up on the BBC and all over the internet. Interviewed by Associated Press and even Triple J!

Anyway we made a small contribution to the international movement which led to PUSSY RIOT’s eventual release. You know the ripples etc… Check out the solid list of bands below. It was so cool how so many bands came together for a worthy cause.

You can still download it for free from HERE

art by LALOTOA

We’ve known artist / skater BRETT CHAN for a few years now and from the first time we saw one of his canvass’s hanging in a shared office between Monster Children and kiwi label Huffer (when they were on Crown st), straight away we got curious about this guy. RIOT OF THE DAY /// LA LUZ RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE ‘ALL IN WHITE’

art by LALOTOA

Sydney is awash with artists striving to make their music heard amongst a dustbowl of laws which have done their best to shut down the live music eco system in the state of NSW. While a few venues have kept their doors open in support of live music, the city of Sydney is unfortunately operating with one lung when it comes to local music support and you just have to visit Melbourne to know that we got burnt good. Continue reading “RIOT OF THE DAY /// LA LUZ RELEASES DEBUT SINGLE ‘ALL IN WHITE’”

RIOT OF THE DAY /// COURTNEY BARNETT TAKES OUT THE AUSTRALIAN MUSIC PRIZE!

art by LALOTOA

So guess who won $30,000 today? Melbourne’s killer singer songwriter Courtney Barnett (whom we also featured yesterday) took out the 11th Australian Music Prize for her debut album Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit. RIOT OF THE DAY /// TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Today is INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY. And to celebrate we’ve decided to highlight some our favourite women in music. We want to introduce you to some legends, some well known artists you may have forgotten and some new ones.

Though they all make different styles of music, if there’s one thing that connects them, it would probably come down to their originality, style and their one off DNA. There are no other woman like any of them in music and that’s why we think you all need to seek them out. Continue reading “RIOT OF THE DAY /// TODAY IS INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY”

RIOT OF THE DAY /// LORDE (BOWIE) TRIBUTE OF THE YEAR

Music has a bigger purpose in all of our lives and although we are currently wandering ‘lost’ through a Scandinavian forest called Spotify – unlike the film industry, the music industry’s efforts to fight for the rights of musicians has kinda stalled, so right now everyone is living on $2.70 royalties per year. Haha! Well unless you are a successful touring artist with a name. Or you’re just famous and we all know alot of them folk are making bank. But so what? that’s life. The rest of us just need to keep scheming till we get to our own place that we will all be proud to call home, not jail, home. So keep scheming ie; working …hard, don’t sleep! Continue reading “RIOT OF THE DAY /// LORDE (BOWIE) TRIBUTE OF THE YEAR”

RIOT OF THE DAY /// PROTEST SONG BY RAY LALOTOA (FAIT ACCOMPLI)

PROT SONG BY LALOTOA

Hi friends,

I spent the holidays feeling depressed about the Lock out Laws and the current state of NSW. Anyway I started humming this tune and I kinda ended up expressing my feelings the best way I know how, thru song (and Garageband).

I’m not gonna say too much about our current nightmare, because I know we’ve all been keeping up with all the articles. I just want people to know that what is happening to us is only an introduction to what is coming. We’re feeling the pinch with these abhorrent lock out laws, but then there’s the treatment of refugees, the poor, the old, gay and lesbians, the marginalised and even our indigenous people. Our freedoms are being challenged by our Government both State and National and things are only going to get worst, not better, worst!
