The first time we saw these guys was on a pretty chill night, all of a sudden our toes were tappin, five minutes later we were dancin and half an hour later we were all kissing girls on the dance floor. The music was that good, everyone just wanted to hug strangers and draw love hearts on people’s faces. Continue reading “RESIDENTS /// ‘MOTH KING’ TAKE OVER WEDNESDAY NIGHTS AT CAPTAIN COOK HOTEL”

TAKING BERLIN /// NEW JANUARY RESIDENTS EVERY WEDNESDAY AT CAPTAIN COOK HOTEL!

TAKING BERLIN RESIDENTS HEADER

If you were hanging around Captain Cook Hotel last year then you may have noticed a new band we’ve been championing, Captain Cook (the band). Anyway after we first met, they ended up playing a pretty amazing residency which lasted for 15 shows and everyone who came along had a blast witnessing them make magic every Wednesday night. Due to Christmas and the Summer Holidays Captain Cook’s residency had to sadly come to an end. But don’t worry you’ll be seeing more of those legends around soon. Rarely seen on Aussie stages, The Brag presents The Art’s world renowned live show. An abrasive, exciting and intoxicating blend of melody, mayhem and solid rock ‘know how’.

Through the wreckage of The Art’s most trialling year, the band return with their strongest effort yet. A year of battling long American roads, European festivals, drug charge allegations and a change in personnel has proved the winning formula for this band at their creative peak. An epiphany amid chaos, The Art’s new single ‘Dead Inside’ showcases the band’s extraordinary ability to touch a nerve through daring sonic expression.

The first Australian performance in almost a year is now booked for November 8 at Sydney’s Oxford Art Factory. In favour of touring, the band will focus all attention for the release of single ‘Dead Inside’ on this one hometown show.

The band have opened this event as a platform for their most respected peers in the musical and creative realms also. With the scale of offerings way beyond that of a regular club show, Oxford Art Factory are offering admittance to the entire venue, two stages and performing areas for the price of one ticket. DIE! DIE! DIE! ANNOUNCED AS SUPPORT FOR ‘GANG OF FOUR’ AUSTRALIAN TOUR! LOCALS FAIT ACCOMPLI TO PLAY SYDNEY SHOW

Die! Die! Die!
Announced For Australian Support

Ahead of the 2014 Australian tour to celebrate the 35th anniversary of their classic album Entertainment! Gang of Four have announced that the very special guests at each Australian show will be NZ’s Die! Die! Die! with locals Fait Accompli also joining in for the Sydney show!

Having spent the better part of the past 8 years on the road, Die! Die! Die! now want to make your head, heart, and soul their home. Their entire history has involved movement. The band travelled to Chicago to cut their first self-titled release with some guy in a brick basement (Steve Albini – responsible for some of the greatest records of all time). The  record sent Die! Die! Die! on a whirlwind series of tours, gaining them considerable worldwide notoriety. Last year, Die! Die! Die! self-released their fourth studio album Harmony, recorded at Blackbox Studios, France. Harmony’s raw energy and emotion offers a savant-pop drenched with DIY punk philosophy.  Produced by Chris Townend (Portishead, D12, Violent Femmes), it is the best encapsulation of Die! Die! Die!’s power yet.

Gang of Four is one of the most radical, and radically important, rock groups of the last 30 years. Formed in Leeds in 1976, Gang of Four first performed in May 1977. All the big bands that followed, the Chili Peppers, INXS, R.E.M., U2, have spoken of their debt to Gang of Four but in more recent years, the band’s influence has become almost universal with the emergence of post-punk influenced bands such as the Rapture, Radio 4, Futureheads, Nine Inch Nails, Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party. The band is led by guitarist, songwriter and vocalist Andy Gill, widely acclaimed as an innovator and much copied around the world.

Gang of Four’s debut album Entertainment! was a rare bird for its time, an enthralling amalgam of punk, funk and angular rock that signalled a changing-of-the-guard ushering in of the post- punk era. Released in 1979, this spiky collection of danceable songs would go on to inspire a generation – stripped of excess flesh, it revealed a twitching skeleton rising against apathy and commodity. The influence of Entertainment! is still being felt in music today.  To celebrate 35 years since its release, Gang Of Four will perform the entire album in full and all the hits that followed across Australia in 2014.

GANG OF FOUR POSTER SYDNEY

THIS IS NOT THE END /// BUT THIS IS THE FINAL WEEK OF ‘CANTEEN’ IN BONDI

Back in the early part of 2012 we got involved with a new venue called CANTEEN, located on the main strip of Bondi Beach. Every Thursday our weekly night RESIDENTS booked a whole lotta new bands to play at CANTEEN and some of the most amazing good times have been had by many friends and bands who have passed through over the last couple of years.

Unfortunately due to the nature of the Swiss Grand Hotel needing to renovate and make the building into another cash cow for the rich (baha!) CANTEEN will be looking for a new home.

So yeah this week is the final week, after this Sunday CANTEEN will be no more, well in Bondi.

So here are a few highlights for us…

– The Mylee Grace month-long residency which ended up getting extended for another month. We all still regret it didn’t stay for three months.

– Witnessing the talents of the following bands; THE CHITTICKS, THE JONES RIVAL, BEC AND BEN (thanks to Helen!), THE VERNONS, PIRATES ALIVE, THE RUMOURS, B-MASSIVE, VIOLET PULP, THE OWLS, MAGIC BONES, PAPERCRANE, NEW LOVERS, HIGH-TAILS, BIG WHITE, PILOTS, THE TROUBLED ROMANTICS, BONEZ, VIRGO RISING and many more…

– That night when GOONS OF DOOM, OTCHKIES and THE RUMINATERS gave us faith that this place actually rocked!

– That night ELEGANT SHIVA and THE DARK HAWKS tore CANTEEN a new a**hole and people were lined up down the street.

– When one of this Country’s most underrated solo artists DAVOR PAVLOVIC (brother of Steve Pav – Modular Records) aka OLD TECHNOLOGY humbly came in at late notice on many occasions and played some of the most soulful tunes and then left many people either confused or totally blown away.

– The jukebox giving dj’s a run for their money.

– Who could forget GOONS OF DOOM New Years 2013? or remember it? Haha!

– That lock-in that happened on a cold Tuesday night? WTF?!!!! ps: When Aya says it’s a casual night of him playing acoustic guitar, don’t believe a word he says!

Which brings us to this weeks farewell party. Together with CANTEEN we invited some of our favourite bands to come together to help us celebrate what has been an amazing couple of years. And from tonight till Sunday CANTEEN will be heaving with some of the most amazing musical talent from all around. So please do yourself a favour and get down to one of the shows. We advise you to come early to avoid any disappointment.

A big reason behind this week is to simply thank you all for your love and support, the other reason is because we just wanted to give something back to CANTEEN and the music community at large for giving new bands the opportunity to play some pretty amazing and special shows that many of us will remember for years to come as part of the beginning of a special journey for many of these amazing artists.

Thanks for the good times CANTEEN. We look forward to what comes next. If it’s anything like it has been then of course you guys will be walkin on rainbows.

WORD ON THE BEACH!
