LA FEMME Q&A /// w- ELLA FENCE

ELLA FENCE

Ella Fence is a very talented singer songwriter from Gold Coast who will be appearing this Saturday 9 May at LA FEMME. So get down to Captain Cook Hotel to catch her soulful voice and songs which cover all matters of the heart. Ella is currently on tour to celebrate the release of her latest single UNKNOWN WATER. We caught up with Ella before her journey South to ask her a few quick questions about being a woman in music.

Any female artists out there who made a big impact on you as an artist? If so who? and why?
Lorde, because she’s Lorde and doesn’t let anything hold her back – she’s too busy working on her art and sharing it with people, which is what it’s all about in the end, human connection.

She’s just a woman expressing exactly who she is and inspiring others, which is what I aspire to.

Ella Fitzgerald as well, for her spirit and the impact she had on the music industry for women. The environment and opportunities would be very different without the courage and determination of this woman. My stage name is a homage to this lady.

What does it mean to you personally to be a female artist in 2015?
Being an artist, no matter which category you fall in (musician, poet, painter), you’ve got a voice and the opportunity to connect with and inspire others. It’s important for women to connect, share experiences and be strength for each other.

The fact it’s 2015 simply gives me the opportunity to communicate with a wider audience, across more platforms, that we are enough, all on our own, just as we are.

What music are you listening to right now?
Alt-j. So much Alt-j.

Is there a female artist that you look at and say to yourself “she’s doin it right!”
Lorde and Banks.

What are you working on right now?
I’ve just finished filming a music video for my new single Unknown Water with the incredible Mike Calvino, Stuart Chapman (Double Deuce) and Jamie Brookes. It’s in editing stages now, so excited to see it. The overall theme is freeing yourself from yourself and expectations.

If you were the boss of the music industry what would you do to make things better for musicians in this Country?
More opportunities for mentorship! Terri and Dan at Who Agencies have been my mentors since late 2013, every step of the way since before I went to the UK and EU to record the EP, every step through releasing my single, booking my shows. Technically I’m self-managed, but our monthly meetings put me in the right direction. Their guidance that is incredibly important and I’m incredibly grateful for, as an artist trying to juggle creativity and “normal” life.
