Circle Pit at The Annandale 07/08/2010

Playing with the Nice Folk in support of Kim Salmon and the Surrealists, Saturday night’s show at the Annandale was… how do I say this? Good? But not great? No, I didn’t stay for the headliners and true, I only caught the tail end of the Nice Folk’s set which was fairly unimpressive (but I’m not here to review the Nice Folk so I’ll shut up about them) but I was, as always, excited to see Circle Pit. And, like I said, their set didn’t out-and-out suck but it certainly wasn’t one of their best. The band played well, and the audience was obviously enjoying itself as Jack and Angie brandished their inimitable class of grunge and swagger – which for some might make them seem distant on stage, but you know. They do what they do.

I personally don’t have a problem with it. The main thing that I felt pulled Saturday’s performance down a few points was the sound quality. Admittedly, I’m not an expert on this kind of thing but I kepT noticing that the guitar levels were really loud, almost drowning out the vocals. And it wasn’t the good kind of loud guitar, it felt more like the aurally distracting kind of loud guitar. But having said that, there were plenty of good things about the band’s offering. Their stage presence was impressive, the music was tight and they played a few (great sounding) new tracks as well as material from their stellar album, Bruise Constellation. So yea, it was a good show, they’re a great band, but I’ve definitely seen better from them. And I’m looking forward to seeing them at the Oxford Art Factory’s birthday party.
