RIOT RADIO INTERVIEWS SYDNEY BANDS /// WHY IS BEING IN A BAND IMPORTANT TO YOU?

We invited some of our favourite Sydney bands THE JONES RIVAL,CHICKS WHO LOVE GUNS, FAIT ACCOMPLI, FIRESAINT, STICKY FINGERS, THE CHITTICKS, THE RUMINATERS, BANG! BANG! ROCK N’ ROLL to pop around for a little Q & A.

We were originally going to make the videos really short, but all the bands had some really interesting answers and that in itself was kinda refreshing.

This is the first part to a series of videos we are putting together to help push a new live music night RIOT RADIO which we are launching at THE BACKROOM in Sydney on THURSDAY 11 APRIL.

MY BYRON BAY RIOT /// OUR MONTHLY PARTY LAUNCHES FOR 2013

THE GREAT NORTHERN in Byron Bay is hands down our favourite live venue in all of Australia. Sorry everyone out there, but it’s a fact. To us the Great Northern is the Holy Grail of live venues. It has a mega sound system, the room can hold a massive amount of people and the punters in Byron Bay, they really know how to party when it comes to supporting touring bands. As an audience the Byron Bay folk are always willing to give unknown bands a chance and this to us is rad.

After putting on many tours and shows at the Great Northern over the years, we were lucky enough to receive an invitation to put on a monthly party and of course we said yes please and thank you.

So to kick things off our 2013 launch show will feature Sydney heavyweights, FAIT ACCOMPLI who will be heading North alongside two bands who are both getting great exposure at the moment, THE CHITTICKS and THE JONES RIVAL. The local love will come from new Byron Bay favourites PRO VITA.

Our April and May shows are already filling up with great lineups and we invite all talented bands to get in touch if you are serious about getting your music out there. email: mysydneyriot@gmail.com

As you all know our whole mission is to expose the wide range of independent bands that we love to better audiences in better venues, so this opportunity is so awesome we just want touch the sky!

If you’ve been to our past shows, you know it’s going to be a RIOT! See you at the show BYRON BAY!

15/21 FEATURED ARTIST – FAIT ACCOMPLI

15 FAIT ACCOMPLI

Artist: FAIT ACCOMPLI
City: Sydney, NSW
Style: soul Punk
Members: Mr Ray, Ms Skarlett, Mr Brett

Our main writer slipped over and broke his arm at the kebab shop after seeing Tame Impala last night. This morning we asked the Work experience kid to write a quick little article about our feature artist FAIT ACCOMPLI, but he had weekend community service for drawing dicks on a wall.

So instead of the usual program we’ve been running this December we decided to send some random email questions to the band. We managed to get in touch with singer/ guitarist Mr Ray who was kind enough to return our questions. Here’s what he had to say…

How’s it going?

I’m good, just chillin.

What are you up to?

Just watched Australian Joel Parkinson win the Surf World Championship on the TV today. It was very inspiring.

Are you stoned?

Ya Mun! Nah just joking.

When was your last night out on the town?

On Thursday night I went to see TWINCEST play at Canteen in Bondi. They were amazing! it was totally mad fun. Later in the night I bumped into VD and Cowboy from the GOONS. I don’t remember getting home.

Are you an alcoholic?

No, I think I’m doing fine thanks.

Are you a drug addict?

No! Are these questions for real?

How was the year for FAIT ACCOMPLI?

We had a great year, getting everything back to the right level has been the main mission for us this year and now it feels like we’re ready to hit up the next adventure.

Any highlights?

Our SPIES tour was pretty amazing, heading to Perth was great and visiting Bon Scott’s grave was spiritually fulfilling. Playing two shows in Byron Bay was definitely a big highlight for us this year. I feel like the Coastal towns really understand what we are trying to do as a band. The last time we played The Great Northern, Byron Bay it was packed and we got an encore. This wasn’t one of those pretend encores, this was the real deal. Hearing people screaming out your band’s name is one of the most exciting feelings for any band.

Any Lowlights?

No not really. Well there was the microphone to the face incident. haha!

FAIT ACCOMPLI has gone through many lineup changes, what has that been like for you as a musician?

I see life as constant change, so as long as I am growing as a person then it doesn’t bother me who I am playing music with. With every person that has been in Fait, I try to just play to their strengths, it doesn’t matter if someone has big skills or none, if they have soul then you can always work with that. As soon as a musician moves away from the band on a passion level I just readjust myself to the next scenario.

If your heart is still in it the music will live on and when it’s time for it to die you’re pretty much the first to know. But right now everything seems to be in its right place.

Are you guys playing any Music Festivals over the summer?

We’d like to be, I mean we applied for many but we got the old rejection email a few times, which sucks!

What’s coming up next for FAIT ACCOMPLI?

We hope to have all of our new songs ready to go in the early part of 2013. From there we’d like to demo our new tracks then hopefully try to get ourselves into a decent studio with a strong producer to record what we think will be our best work yet. So yeah can’t wait.

O and there’s been talk about looking for proper management etc…

What is your songwriting process?

I tend to just listen out for the sounds, the songs generally fall from the sky. But right now I’m listening out harder than usual. Songs are very casual affairs for us, like we can just jam and write a song in 5 minutes. Our songs tend to write themselves, it’s bizarre. At the moment I am really challenging myself to think hard about songs and ideas, so maybe with a little bit of effort we could possibly make a record that will represent something different, maybe even a brave new world. So that is potentially very exciting for us as a band.

What are you hoping to achieve in 2013?

We are trying our best to get on music festivals next year around Australia. We get pretty decent live reviews so we just think it’s the next step for us. So yeah message to all bookers out there, please book us! You can contact our booker here – email: weareartistunion@gmail.com

We also want to travel abroad, so working hard on this new recording is very important to us.

Do you have any favourite bands in Australia right now?

Check out the 21 bands that are being featured in the SYDNEY UNDERGROUND MUSIC MONTH. They are all rad!

Any last words?

People really need to start paying attention to real live bands in 2013 or else we will all die.

PS: Here’s a live review we got from the internet…

SUGAR ARMY ALBUM LAUNCH, GOOD GOD, SYDNEY 18.10.2012
Kicking off the show was locals Fait Accompli which are a magnificent mix of garage rock and indie rock. The howling vocals and the furious drum beats created such a sound in the tiny room, there was a need to take a break outside. There are no negatives in the how loud they were; it felt like they needed to be that loud, any softer the band could sound drowned out by each other.  The drumming was like watching a seasoned metal drummer and perfectly backed up by the intense strumming by bassist. The frantic strumming and virtuosos of guitarist was something to be astounded by. Definitely watch out for Fait Accompli in the future years.

MEDIA RELEASE: THE FREE PUSSY RIOT PARTY COMES TO BYRON BAY

Politics seems to be the current language of choice for many creative groups lately. Sydney’s My Sydney Riot have been getting behind a lot of causes to date and very recently they have been engaged with the Free Pussy Riot worldwide movement. After releasing a 20 track music compilation, a drum event in Taylor Square and a packed out event at Flinders Hotel in Sydney a few weeks back, My Sydney Riot decided to bring the Free Pussy Riot party to the Great Northern, Byron Bay, one of the most exciting live venues in Australia.

On Saturday 6th October a special lineup of independent bands will come together for one night only; Fait Accompli (Syd), Pirates Alive (Gold Coast), Mylee and the Milkshakes (Syd), Bec and Ben (Syd) and locals The Deers.

Also featuring on the night will be the official debut screening of a short film by local Byron Bay label Tallow Gallery starring talented young up and coming surfer, Cloudy Rhodes. The film titled ‘Journey’ (preview above) sees Cloudy traverse through some epic landscapes from South Africa to Mozambique and Swaziland. This film ties in with the important message that women and all humans alike have every right to get out there and share their stories with the world, a right of passage which unfortunately still remains a rare concept in many societies, even in these modern times. This film is not to be missed.

So bring along your friends, dress colourful or bring a colourful balaclava and a smile and help us celebrate our right to freedom of speech, a right which wasn’t afforded to the three members of Russian punk band Pussy Riot, Yekaterina Samutsevich, Maria Alekhina and Nadezhda Tolokonnikova who are currently serving two years jail for speaking our against their government.

MY SYDNEY RIOT HEADS WEST FOR THE FIRST EVER ‘MY PERTH RIOT’

So we were sitting around the office a few weeks back trying to think up some cool ideas, like giving up music altogether and going into the Bank Robbery industry, but they’re already doing it themselves. We then changed our minds. So we thought “fuck it! lets organise a Party in Perth! so that’s what we did. Cool idea, now we have to get there! Baha!

This will be the first RIOT to take place in the West and the hope is for this event to continue on into the future as a cultural exchange / celebration of music between the two big cities. Maybe we can swap women or men? for the love of music? Cool idea.

We have curated a great lineup of diverse bands and we will definitely be having some good times at Perth’s no.1 live venue, The Rosmount Hotel. So if you have friends in Perth or live in Perth, Facebook glue this poster to your wall and come along. Facebook invite: https://www.facebook.com/events/315338368558156/?ref=ts

ARTIST OF THE MONTH – FAIT ACCOMPLI

Sydney’s FAIT ACCOMPLI are currently out on the road literally setting fire to stages around Australia with their Soul Punk musical powers. So we here at MSR were first unsure, then we thought “fuck it!” let’s make FAIT ACCOMPLI our ARITST OF THE MONTH for July. So tune in over the coming weeks as we follow them through their SPIES tour and get some fly on the wall info about the shows and after show shenanigans. Like we’ve already heard about the SAILOR JERRY fuelled Gold Coast all-nighter they pulled with friends DEAD BEAT BAND, PIRATES ALIVE and a loose member of STICKY FINGERS last Friday night which led to a near on stage biff between the members of DEAD BEAT BAND during their set at a packed Great Northern in Byron Bay on Saturday. One of the boys was then ejected from the venue and took the $300 cab ride home option to the Gold Coast – Rock n’ Roll! Sounds like the tour is going swell!

The first single from SPIES ‘NO GREAT EXPECTATIONS’ / video with lyrics for Karaoke!

FAIT ACCOMPLI KICK OFF SPIES TOUR THIS WEEK!

If you’re not up to much this weekend in Brisbane, Surfers Paradise or Byron Bay then get yourself to one of the FAIT ACCOMPLI gigs. These shows are set to be a ton of fun. Some great bands are playing and a lot of good times to be had. See you out there!

MY SYDNEY RIOT presents… FAIT ACCOMPLI SPIES AUSTRALIAN TOUR 2012

THREE S.L.A.M SHOWS TO CELEBRATE LIVE MUSIC AND HELP SAVE THE ANNANDALE HOTEL!

Not many live venues have the street cred and reputation of The Annandale Hotel, its history is rich with musical experiences that will stay with many of us forever.  The Anndandale has been through alot as a live venue and Sydney has shared in these times, the good, the bad and the awesome.

So right now is another one of those crucial moments in the history of the Annandale where they are reaching out to the people of Sydney (yes that’s you and me!) to get behind this new campaign where we can all help save the Annandale brick by brick, yes literally by buying a brick!

We were asked to paint this mural at The Annandale. Sick!

Owners, The Rule Brothers, launched their Buy-A-Brick (BAB) Campaign to an incredible response late 2011. Bricks are being sold left right and centre with money going towards a much-needed upgrade and to further reduce the hotel’s debts. As thanks the brothers want to give back to supporters by opening the doors with three free gigs kicking off on National SLAM day, Thursday 23rd February.

On 23rd February 2010, the SLAM (Save Live Australian Music) rally saw 20,000 people march through Melbourne in protest against the Victorian Government’s misguided policy link between live music and violence. The SLAM rally was the largest cultural protest in Australia’s history.

The focal point for these events will be on the hotel’s BAB Campaign. BAB packages, starting at $50, will be for sale on the night, the first round of plaques will be mounted on the outside of the hotel and the for sale signs will be coming down!

Entry to all events is FREE and we encourage everyone to come down to be a part of Australian music history.

Now all of Australia has the opportunity to participate in a national event that celebrates our local
musicians in our small venues. Enter The Annandale Hotel.

The Annandale Team is excited to announce their SLAM (Save Live Australian Music) Day gig details:

Thursday 23rd February
Papa Vs Pretty + Cabins + Palms (ex Red Riders)

Friday 24th February
Fait Accompli + Raise the Crazy + Devine Electric + Blackie (Hard Ons)

Saturday 25th February

FAIT ACCOMPLI – NO FOOL REMIX BY TAMARA PILLER

In late 2011 Mr Ray (FAIT ACCOMPLI) approached close friend and electronic artist Tamara Piller to remix their single NO FOOL. Over the summer Tamara put said track through its paces and gave it a different but tasteful twist, turning No Fool, a flat-out riffy rock n’ roll song into a dark paced electro / tech house track.

So like all things Fait Accompli this track is now available for all you electronic music heads to enjoy for free. Just head to http://faitaccompli.bandcamp.com to download it, then drop it at your next BBQ or Rave. To be fully appreciated this remix needs to be heard loud, so turn it up to 11!

Living in Sydney Australia, Tamara Piller is a long-term veteran of the drums, uncovering her passion at the young age of twelve when she played in an Orchestra conducted by the well-known Russell Hammond. The drum kit was her first love and she went on to form the indie rock band Beau Monde that was classed as “Highly danceable electro-rock” by Glenn Dickie, Label Manager EMI. Shortly after Beau Monde, Tamara turned her passion for beats and technology to the production studio, and began working with artists from Australia, Argentina, Berlin and America.

‘AFTER BAKE!’ THIS WEEKEND AT FBi SOCIAL / INTERVIEW: FAIT ACCOMPLI

This Saturday sees a stellar lineup take over FBi Social in celebration of independent music in Sydney. A few bands are getting together to put on a party and celebrate music and the good times. So we thought we’d have a few words with headliners Fait Accompli to hear their take on all things music life in Sydney.

AFTERBAKE, nice concept. Is this some kind of anti Homebake festival gig? Yeah totally we’re taking on the establishment! Nick Cave look out we’re going to drown you out all the way from a little venue in the Cross. ha ha! (just joking)

Do you wish you were actually playing at Homebake? Well we got asked to play but we’re not going to play any major festivals until they free that 14 year old kid in Bali for weed possession. “Free The Bali Weed Kid – Now!”  ”Free The Bali Weed Kid – Now!” These are our simple demands.

So what is your point of view on Boy and Bear winning all those Aria’s? Look we love Boy & Bear, we just think that their music is making it too dangerous for kids in the mosh pit. What happened to the joy of slow dancing?

Ok so we take it that you don’t like Boy  and Bear? No no no don’t get me wrong, we totally appreciate what Boy and Bear do, we just don’t believe that young people should have music drip-fed to them by the radio. There needs to be way more punk rock music or just other voices and different styles added to the mix on high rotation, especially on day time radio at a National level. Is music with street punk attitude illegal in this country? It feels like we are living in China!

Your thoughts on Triple J? Mass saturation on Triple J leads to Aria Awards.

Any advice for independent bands? Good luck? ha ha! Look FBi Radio is a beacon of hope for all independent bands in Sydney. Take your songs along to an OPEN DAY (every first Monday of the month) and chat to Dan Zilber (music director), he will give you some good advice and he is actually very friendly. Independent bands should also send their records to overseas blogs like Pitchfork and Stereogum etc… if your music is good, you might just get lucky. Nothing turns your luck around in Australia like a word from our friends from foreign lands. It’s bizarre.

Do you have anything to say about the lineup on Saturday? The bands we are playing with are really exciting and everyone should come out early and see Bang! Bang! Rock n’ Roll! play, we actually can’t wait to see them. We also put together a neat little four track Free Music Sampler compilation that you can download as a sweet taster before the gig. It’s going to be a Hoot!

Any last words? Free The Bali Weed Kid!

AFTER BAKE: for those who didn’t just fall off their dinosaur. Stay out late and throw down with the vanguard of Sydney’s underground music scene.
